Commercial cleaning companies are being contracted now more than ever to provide janitorial services in all industry settings. One of the main reasons for this is the return to work for many employees following the Covid-19 pandemic. Businesses want to make sure that their employees are safe and feel safe when they come to work. We are going to be exploring the question of whether or not office-grade disinfectants are effective against all variants of Covid-19. We will also be looking at the requirements for disinfecting solutions to be included on the approved U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) N list and the specific commercial janitorial services available.

Do all disinfectants kill newer variants of Covid?

No is the honest answer. However, products included on the EPA N list do.  That’s why it’s so important to read the information supplied with each product. Each product label should confirm the ‘kill claim’ which is the dwell time needed on a surface to really disinfect and state which viruses and bacteria the product are effective against.

The EPA ‘expects products on List N to kill all strains and variants of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) when used according to the label directions.’

The EPA regulates the claims on disinfectant product labels. Before a company can sell or market a disinfectant whose label claims to kill a certain pathogen, the EPA must authorize that claim during the registration process. Rigorous testing must be completed, and the results certified. Then the disinfecting product can be approved for the EPA N list. Companies testing their disinfectant products against multiple variants of viruses or bacteria must support their claims by providing sound science and testing data.

Any professional commercial cleaning company will only use products from this approved list.

Disinfecting your facility.

The latest information published by the CDC state ‘The virus that causes COVID-19 can land on surfaces. It’s possible for people to become infected if they touch those surfaces and then touch their nose, mouth, or eyes.’

As a business, the CDC guidelines suggest you will want to either clean more frequently or choose to disinfect in shared spaces if the space:

  • Is a high traffic area, with many people.
  • Is a high-touch area.
  • Is poorly ventilated.
  • Does not provide access to handwashing or hand sanitizer.
  • Is occupied by people at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
  • If a sick person or someone who tested positive for COVID-19 has been in your facility within the last 24 hours, you should clean AND disinfect the space.
